Standard Bank's DevOps Journey

Larger organisations faced with the challenge of reducing software release cycle times normally assume their legacy applications will disable their ability to do so. Standard Bank in South Africa have addressed not only the technical challenges but the cultural issues also.

This presentation takes you through how the largest bank in Africa embarked on it's DevOps journey. You will hear how Standard Bank is transforming its delivery process to provide new features and services at velocity.

It was clear to Standard Bank that, to remain relevant, there needed to be changes. The ultimate goal was a deployment pipeline that could support continuous deployment. Of course, introducing continuous deployment into a large, established organization is challenging to say the least. The team found it difficult to get everything they wanted to build into the production environment.

It was time to start breaking down silos. A close partnership between Dev and Ops was essential if there was going to be any real improvement but it demanded a real change in the way work happened at Standard Bank. This was where Standard Bank's DevOps journey began.

Speaker: Justin Arbuckle, Vice President EMEA & Chief Enterprise Architect, CHEF

Justin is a passionate proponent of the transformative potential of DevOps* in large enterprises. Previously he was Executive Chief Architect at GE Capital where he introduced and sponsored DevOps. He has been an executive on three continents; working in Financial Services for the last 20 years in such diverse areas as innovation, venture capital and consulting.

Justin's focus at CHEF is in helping large enterprises understand how to de-risk their cloud journeys through automation and how to capitalise on DevOps practises in environments with significant legacy investments.

*DevOps breaks down the barriers that exist in the traditional relationship that Developers and Operations have in an enterprise. DevOps allows companies to speed up their applications delivery without compromising the quality of customer service, removes development constraints, implements automation and a feedback loop from Operations to Developers
