The announcement comes at their innaugural Atmosphere event which took place today the Googleplex. Atmosphere, an invitation only event, discussed how companies can focus their technology expertise on projects that truly improve their businesses instead of managing complex applications, technology platforms and devices. Featured speakers included Cloud Father Marc Benioff, whose company Salesforce.com is known to collaboate closely with Google, and Dr. Werner Vogels, Vice President & CTO, Amazon.com.
said on his blog "We are also sharing details about improvements to Google Docs, made possible by a new codebase that will allow us to deliver richer functionality more quickly."
The speed at which the google docs respond is impressive, almost as fast as traditional server software. But probably the most important advancement to google docs is the live collaboration which is now possible. The company claim that upto 50 people can work on a single document at the same time and see changes as they happen letter by letter whilst Google Chat allows people to communicate outside of the document.
The rich new features to spreadsheets include drag and drop columns, formula editing bar, cell auto-complete all of which were not possible with older browser technologies. Inside documents there is a margin ruler, better numbering and bullets and much improved image placement. Flow charts, diagrams and other schematics in real time is also possible with a new editor for drawings on Google Docs.
We’ve made big improvements to our document upload feature so moving files from your computer to the cloud is easier now. Imported documents retain their original structure more accurately, so you can hit the ground running editing in the browser without having to fix formatting like bullets and text alignment."
