Decision for Heroes Helps CHC Win Key SAR Contract

Irish Start-Up's Software Used in Successful Tendering of €500m Irish Coast Guard Contract

D4H_Robin_Blandford.jpgCHC Ireland, part of the world's largest helicopter company, CHC Helicopter Corporation, has revealed that analytical software produced by Irish start-up, Decisions 4 Heroes, was instrumental in helping win a €500m Search and Rescue (SAR) renewal contract with the Irish Coast Guard.

The deal sees CHC continue to provide outsourced Search and Rescue services from four bases in the Republic of Ireland for ten more years when its current agreement expires in 2012.

During the tender process, CHC uploaded its historic SAR data to D4H operational analysis software. From this, they were able to capture key patterns and trends allowing them to optimise their winning tender.

Whilst CHC is known for quickly adopting new technologies, it is their pilots and crews that routinely demonstrate skill, courage and dedication in undertaking missions in the most testing of conditions in order to save lives.

After the signing of the contract last week,  Managing Director of CHC Ireland, Mark Kelly said: "The Decisions For Heroes software allowed my team to analysis rescue mission data very quickly, easily and in great detail. The software was amazingly flexible and D4H are to be commended."

CHC will operate five of the new generation of Sikorsky S92A Search & Rescue helicopters from Dublin, Shannon, Sligo and Waterford airports. The 33 passenger aircraft, valued at €26m, carries paramedics who provide life-saving interventions on their casualties, and with a range of 330 nautical miles, they can be onsite anywhere within Irish waters within a one-hour of receiving the vital emergency call.

Decisions For Heroes is the brain-child of experienced SAR member Robin Blandford (pictured). Officially launched on Tuesday 19th May 2009, it was a graduate of the Dublin Institute of Technology's Hothouse programme and has won several awards for its innovation.

The web-based crew management analysis tool is available to every type of emergency response team around the world. Instead of archiving information as paperwork, the software generates real-time profiles of members, available resources, and experience levels. and helps rescuers cut costs and save lives by making better decisions.

Blandford told IrishDev.com this morning that CHC was able to use the D4H software to automatically analyse SAR mission data to determine the most common injuries treated and medical techniques used. From this, they were able to project forward looking assumptions which helped them prepare their tender.

Blandford added that the use of D4H software by CHC will stand them in good stead to win new business globally. He said "These type of SAR tenders are happening around the world all of the time, and the fact that our software has been used and trusted by the largest helicoptor company in the world should open doors for us."
