Origina Invests €1.1M in Cloud R&D

Irish IT Services Company Aims to Set the Scene for International Enterprise Cloud Computing Infrastructure

ORIGINA_Tomas_OLeary.jpgOne of Ireland's leading IT services companies, Origina, has announced an investment of €1.1M for the research, design and build of an innovative on-demand cloud infrastructure service aimed at enterprise computing (mainly IBM) environments.

The initial investment has been raised internally, and will be used to fund R&D in addition to a number of collaborative research projects with the leading universities, including the UCD School of Computer Science & Informatics, to help create a dynamic and secure cloud platform.

Origina is also working closely with a leading Irish data centre and network provider to help host and manage the new infrastructure, which it plans to launch  in Ireland before the end of 2010.

The Sandyford company was founded (as Unitech) in 1998 and now employs 40 people between here and London. Tomás O'Leary, founder and managing director of Origina commented: "It's the right time to make a serious investment in our business. Our aim is to provide a base for talented individuals to come together and develop exciting new ideas and approaches to IT infrastructure and service delivery. We are particularly excited about this new service as we believe it will overhaul the way businesses currently pay for and use their IT systems."

Enterprise Ireland is providing strategic advice and support to Origina as it looks to extend its reach internationally, and Origina is hoping to attract up to €2M in additional external funding over the next 12 months to support growth and further infrastructure investments.  O'Leary told IrishDev.com: "The additional funding is being sought primarily to enter the UK market which is worth approximately €1.5bn - €2bn, and should plans go accordingly, we should be in a position to launch an international launch in early 2011."

Professor John Murphy, UCD School of Computer Science & Informatics, said, "This is an excellent project to be involved with as we continue to build a viable knowledge economy in Ireland. By delivering sophisticated research, modeling and test procedures for Origina's evolving cloud solution, we are helping to optimise its performance and commercialisation capabilities."

This announcement follows the recent launch of Origina's IT benchmarking service which is expected to generate more than €3M in new revenue this year (more)
