Partnership with ABB's B&R Industrial Automation to Seek Out Cost Savings and Carbon Reduction in Wind Tunnel Facility

Williams Racing has announced a new technology and innovation partnership with factory automation solutions provider B&R Industrial Automation (B&R), which will see B&R embed their PLC hardware and I/O modules in the Williams Racing's wind tunnel facilities at the team’s base in Grove.

 

Williams Racing's core competencies are the design and development of racing cars to compete in the Formula One World Championship. But behind the scenes, the Williams Racing team work continually develop and improve its performance and reliability also for their business and operations at their UK headquarters. With ever increasing demands on business efficiency, coupled with a drive to Net Zero carbon emissions, capturing more data that generates greater insights of the team’s plant and infrastructure is a key contributor to enabling a higher performing and more sustainable business.

 

Controlled by B&R’s APROL Edge Controller, the enhancements will provide measurement and recording of energy consumption of the wind tunnel infrastructure, and more granular control and management of the facility that will drive improvements in energy consumption, preventative maintenance optimisation and business efficiencies.

The Williams FW43B which will contend the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship with drivers George Russell and Nicholas Latifi.

As one of the world's leading Formula One teams, the company has secured 16 FIA Formula One World Championship titles since its foundation in 1977. Nine of these titles have been won in the Constructors' Championship in association with Cosworth, Honda and Renault. The remaining seven titles were won in the Drivers' Championship with Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.
