SITA Develop NextGen in Letterkenny

Air Travel IT Provider to Develop Next Generation 'SITA AT AIRPORTS' in Ireland as COVID-19 Travel Restrictions Open Up

David Lavorel, CEO SITA AIRPORTS & BORDERS - Letterkenny is recognised as a vital hub for software innovation, making it an obvious choice as a strategic location for the development of their SITA AT AIRPORTS portfolio.SITA, the global IT provider to the airline industry, have announced plans to develop the next generation of its 'SITA AT AIRPORTS' portfolio in Letterkenny. The development will see the company recruit a further 55 people over the next two years, including software engineers, test engineers, UX designers, scrum masters and product owners.

As air travel begins its slow recovery from COVID-19 restrictions, airports, airlines and governments are looking to further streamline their operations and passenger journey through automation and digitisation. To meet this demand, SITA is accelerating the innovation and development of new solutions across baggage management, airport operations, passenger processing and border management. SITA say their solutions are used in more than 1,000 airports and by more than 60 governments globally.

David Lavorel, CEO SITA AIRPORTS & BORDERS, said; “We all are eager to see our industry rebound and technology is a vital component of its recovery. Airports and airlines are looking to technology to automate the passenger journey while digitalising their operations to drive new cost efficiencies. Many of these solutions are being developed in Letterkenny.”

SITA established its office in Letterkenny in 2003, and Lavorel noted that Ireland, and Letterkenny in particular, had in recent years established itself as an important hub for software development. Growing the team from 20 to more than 100 today, the company invested in a new-state-of-the-art building in 2015 to accommodate its growing software teams, and today, they are responsible for designing and creating software solutions for four of SITA’s key portfolios; Lavorel said; “Through the support of the Irish government, Letterkenny is recognised as a vital hub for software innovation, making it an obvious choice as a strategic location for the development of our SITA AT AIRPORTS portfolio.”

Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland, said; “Today’s announcement by SITA further embeds its operations in the North West and strengthens Ireland’s position within the group as a key operational hub. This investment demonstrates IDA Ireland’s continued commitment to winning regional investment and further endorses Ireland as an attractive location for FDI. I wish SITA every success with this announcement"

On 17th February 2021, SITA was the victim of a cyber security attack of its SITA Passenger Service System which compromised passenger data of airlines across the world.
