As reported in IrishDev.com, the job cuts follow redundancies of almost 2000 Limerick employees in February as it moved its manufacturing operation to Poland. The operation in Cherrywood, which handles sales and technical support for EMEA, has already cut 250 jobs, and numerous more jobs have been lost in the Dell ecosystem.

On February 26th, Dell released its Q4 Fiscal Year 2009 results, announcing reduced sales of $2.55bn down to $13.4bn. Revenue for the full year was $61.1bn.

Upon slowing sales in the US over a year ago, Dell announced cost reductions of $3bn per year up to the end of fiscal 2011.

Brian Gladden, Dell's chief financial officer said "The cost actions we took this past year made us more competitive and delivered value to customers in a challenging economic environment."

He then went on to say "In fact, we now have a clear view to additional opportunities, and are raising our cost-reduction target to $4 billion."

A spokesperson for Dell told IrishDev.com that the job cuts announced today were expected, and form part of a global cost cutting exercise in line with Dell's Q4 trading announcements.

The company said it will maintain its focus on areas that it can control, especially those that benefit customers, including product quality, services and costs. It believes its new global organization aligns the company even more closely with different types of customers, to best understand and efficiently act on their needs. It concluded by saying it will continue to manage its mix of products and services to optimize liquidity, profitability and growth.
