The Email We Know is Dead - Sogeti

Email is losing its Effectiveness - Collaborative and Cloud Technologies are the New Model for Business Communications

SOGETI-Erik-Van-Ommeren.jpgEmail is over as a standalone communications medium, according to author   Erik Van Ommeren, who is Head of Research at IT services company Sogeti's Vint Institute

Instead of relying on email, Organisations today need to harness collaborative technologies and cloud computing to keep up in the new global business environment,  Van Ommeren told a SOCITM (Society of Information Technology Management) meeting in Northern Ireland recently.

Van Ommeren explained how collaboration and cloud computing are a natural fit for communications in the new global business environment: "The way public and private organisations work and are managed is changing in the new economic environment and in response to changes in broader society, he said.

"To better interact with the public, clients and partners, practically everybody is looking at how we can better collaborate internally at all levels and with the external environment, said Van Ommeren.

"Cloud computing and Software as a Service (SaaS), when deployed with the newer collaborative technologies will increasingly be used as a more cost effective and efficient approach to harnessing the power of IT," he explained.

"The role of IT will change, it will be less IT-like and more business like. The IT department of the future will make a significant contribution to the organisation achieving its goals by facilitating, enabling and supporting the users. IT will broker services in a collaborative cloud computing environment, build knowledge, provide guidelines and inspire the organisation to deploy technology in support of the organisation's goals." Van Ommeren added.

Van Ommeren also cited the example of Sogeti's newly released TeamPark global collaboration platform, which facilitates collaboration and social networking for Sogeti's 20,000 globally distributed employees.

Van Ommeren is responsible for VINT, Sogeti's US  research institute.  VINT Research has published papers and books on topics such as Open Innovation, new media, web2.0, the commoditization of IT, IT governance, collaboration and cloud computing. Van Ommeren is a senior analyst who spends part of his time advising organizations on transformation projects, architectural processes and innovation.

He is also   the  author of several IT strategy books including  ‘SOA for Profit - A manager's guide to success with service oriented architecture' and ‘Open for Business -Open Source inspired innovation'. His latest book is ‘Collaboration in the Cloud - how cross boundary collaboration is transforming business'.

Sogeti is a leading provider of professional technology services, specialising in Application Management, Infrastructure Management, High-Tech Engineering and Testing. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cap Gemini S.A which is  listed on the Paris Stock Exchange.
