RTÉ Radio 1 Launches Groundbreaking Docs on One iPhone app
RTÉ Radio has launched a new iPhone application solely dedicated to its award-winning Documentary on One strand. The Docs on One iPhone application is Ireland's first iPhone application devoted to a single radio show and the world's first iPhone application devoted entirely to radio documentaries.
It is also the first radio app in Ireland to use keyword functions to assist the user in searching. Users can search through all RTÉ Radio documentary content by keyword - i.e. type in 'love' and any documentary with love in the title or podcast summary will come up in the search results.
Liam O'Brien, the Producer in charge of Documentary on One developed the app himself after the success of the Doc on One website, which is expected to reach one million mark this for online activities this month. The website has been running since July 1st 2009 (the 1m figure includes visits and podcast download.
The pioneering application Docs on One App joins others in RTÉs Apps stable, including the Radio 1 app and 2fm app, as well as the recently launched RTÉ News Now App .
The new App, and the website, showcase the wealth and variety of RTÉ Radio's award-winning documentary output.The app even allows users to access other Apps/websites whilst still streaming RTÉ Radio documentaries in the background.
Users can personalise the RTÉ content they listen to by creating and managing their own playlists and podcast or download RTÉ Radio documentaries to listen to at a later date through a link to RTÉ's iTunes store.
Users will be able to share each RTÉ Radio documentary and the App itself by Twitter, Facebook or e-mail.
The Documentary on One website has boasted figures of 550,000 podcasts and 330,000 website hits, totalling almost 900,000 online activities, in its first seven months online.
Clare Duignan, Managing Director of RTÉ Radio: said: "The pace of the new media evolution within RTÉ Radio is testament not only to the unique flexibilities of radio as a medium, but also to the energy and vision of our programme makers.
"Developed within RTÉ Radio, this App, alongside the Apps for RTÉ Radio 1 and RTÉ 2fm, offers our audience yet another way to access the very best of RTÉ Radio.
"Last year RTÉ Radio brought users around the globe the world's first-ever radio documentary website. Now that unique offering goes mobile. Not only did these Apps prove to be highly cost-effective to develop, they are also free to our users," Duignan continued.
Listeners to RTÉ Radio can now access services on FM, on LW, on digital radio and TV, live on-line and follow-up on-demand from websites, via podcast, on various mobile applications, via satellite throughout Europe, and on SW in Africa.
